Hiking to Türkiye’s secret spots: Exploring Tunceli’s hidden crater lake
A group of 70 adventurers from Türkiye and abroad embarked Sunday on a challenging hike to the breathtaking Buyer Ana Lake, a crater lake in Tunceli.
The expedition, organized by the Tunceli Mountaineering Club (TUDAK), took participants to an altitude of 9,842 feet. They were rewarded with stunning views and a sense of serenity.
The journey began in Sarigul Village in the Pulumur district, with participants traveling by minibus before tackling a strenuous three-hour trek to the lake.
The demanding route tested their endurance, but the sight of the serene crater lake at the summit made the effort worthwhile.

Upon reaching the peak, hikers rested, lit candles at the sacred site, and captured the moment with numerous photos.
Arzu Can, a first-time participant, expressed her delight: “This place is truly beautiful. I recommend everyone to come. We came with a tour, lit our candles, and distributed our offerings.”
Daimi Dogan discussed the lake’s unique charm and the challenging journey: “The fact that this is a crater lake adds a unique richness. The journey is tough but worth it. We hope Pulumur Municipality and benefactors will improve the road. We had a wonderful trip with guides.”
International participants, like Elif Kilic from Switzerland, found the experience impressive: “Today we came to Buyer Ana Lake, and it is magnificent. We came in perfect harmony with the tour. I recommend it to everyone.”
Annual pilgrimage, community bond for Turkish hikers
Muslum Cicek, who hikes to the lake annually, mentioned its restorative power: “We walk for about three hours, but when we arrive, all our fatigue disappears, and we find peace.”
Erkan Ulucan, visiting from Istanbul, described the destination as a natural wonder and a sacred place: “After a tough three-hour trek, I arrived at a place like paradise. This is a natural wonder and a sacred place according to our beliefs. It’s so beautiful; I invite everyone to come here.”
The expedition to Buyer Ana Crater Lake offered participants a chance to appreciate nature’s beauty and connect with local culture and beliefs. The hikers’ experiences reflect the lake’s significance as both a natural treasure and a site of spiritual importance.
