Türkiye faced a series of devastating wildfires over the weekend, severely impacting the Izmir region.

The fires, which began in various parts of Izmir, have caused significant damage to forested areas, with hundreds of hectares burned.

The combined efforts of local and national firefighting teams have brought the situation under control, but the scale of the disaster is still unfolding.

Selcuk fire spreads rapidly to Kusadasi

The most significant blaze started in the Selcuk district and quickly spread to the neighboring Kusadasi area because of strong winds. This fire alone consumed approximately 350 hectares of forest, equivalent to 490 football fields.

The flames, which began late at night, moved rapidly towards Kusadasi, forcing residents in the Bayrakli Dede neighborhood to evacuate for their safety. Firefighting teams worked tirelessly through the night, managing to contain the fire by morning.

Cesme fire ignited by cigarette butt

Simultaneously, the Cesme district experienced a separate fire that began around 2:30 p.m. on Saturday. This fire, attributed to a discarded cigarette butt, burned 50 hectares of land.

Surveillance footage captured the moment the cigarette was discarded, igniting the blaze that spread swiftly despite attempts by the individual to control it. The fire was extinguished after a ten-hour effort involving both ground and aerial firefighting resources.

Menderes fire requires massive response

The Menderes district also saw significant firefighting activity. Here, a fire that originated in a hobby garden necessitated the deployment of 48 vehicles and 207 personnel, along with five helicopters.

The presence of police water cannons, or TOMAs, aided in controlling the flames, which threatened residential areas and forced evacuations.

Tarim ve Orman Bakani Ibrahim Yumakli confirmed that all active fires in the Izmir region had been contained. He highlighted that 44 fires erupted across the country on the same day, with a majority being human-caused.

“We have currently contained all active fires. Many of these fires were caused by human actions, and we are taking severe measures against those responsible,” Yumakli stated.

Didim Municipality played a critical role in the firefighting efforts, providing water tankers and heavy machinery to support the operations in Selcuk and Kusadasi.

Mayor Hatice Gencay expressed gratitude to all who contributed to the firefighting efforts and extended her sympathies to those affected by the fires.

As emergency services continue to assess the damage and conduct cooling operations, the full extent of the impact is becoming clearer.

Authorities have issued warnings for the coming week, predicting intense winds and high temperatures, which could elevate the risk of further fires. They urge the public to exercise caution and report any suspicious activities immediately to prevent another disaster.
