German cyclist’s epic journey to New Zealand takes her through Türkiye
German cyclist Antonia Hogo, 20, has arrived in Türkiye as part of her ambitious journey from Germany to New Zealand.
Hogo set off from Konstanz, Germany, in March, cycling for six months and covering thousands of kilometers across Europe. Inspired by a New Zealand classmate at the age of nine, Hogo’s route has taken her through Austria, Hungary, Montenegro, Albania, and Greece before reaching Türkiye.
“I want to show that countries can be traveled by bicycle, especially as a 20-year-old lone female cyclist,” Hogo shared with the Anadolu Agency (AA).
Initially starting the trip with a friend, Hogo continued her journey solo after her companion left in Croatia. She has embraced a mix of tent camping and the generous hospitality of cycling enthusiasts she connected with through a social network.
The magic of Turkish hospitality
Hogo has expressed her admiration for the warm hospitality of the Turkish people. “When we pass through cities and villages, they invite us to drink tea and eat.
They are friendly and always invite me to their tables,” she said, highlighting the kindness she has experienced along her route.
German cyclist’s future adventures await
Hogo plans to carry on her journey through Georgia, the Central Asian Turkish republics, and Far Eastern countries before finally reaching New Zealand.
As an agriculture student, she intends to engage in ecological farming in New Zealand temporarily before returning to her studies in Germany.
“Those who want to go on a tour like mine should not be afraid; they should believe in themselves,” Hogo advised, reflecting on the personal growth and freedom she has found throughout her adventure.
Hogo’s journey not only showcases the beauty of traveling by bicycle but also serves as an inspiration for others to explore the world with confidence and openness to new experiences.
