Dominican Republic: Rising star of Caribbean
It ranks high among the countries I’m curious about, one that we’re actually familiar with from our television screens and which, on certain days of the week, visits our homes with its enchanting nature, landscapes, turquoise sea, and unique beaches. Where is this place? It’s a destination both familiar and yet largely unexplored by us. Let’s get to know it closely.
Located on the second-largest island in the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic attracts tourists from around the world with its tropical nature, white sands, vibrant cities and cultural richness. With its historical heritage, warm climate, delicious cuisine, and dynamic tourism structure, it has become an attractive destination for both vacationers and investors. Especially in recent years, it has been in the spotlight in Türkiye due to Acun Medya’s “Survivor” competition.
My travel agent friends and I discovered this unique destination with an invitation and hospitality from Acun Medya’s travel agency, AF (Acun on the Run). Not only did we explore, but we also had the chance to compete in one course and then hold our council. Of course, one of our friends had to say goodbye to the island.
I think to truly understand the magnitude of the “Survivor” organization we’ve watched for years and recognize its scale even through the screen, it was necessary to see it in person. The Acun Medya team has practically established a republic in this country. For over 10 countries where “Survivor” and “Exatlon” competitions are held, they organize massive productions from A to Z, employing about 2,000 people, and we can’t be proud enough of this Turk. We also share in this pride.
Through this article, we wish for many more successes and congratulate everyone who contributed.
While we’re at it, it’s worth sharing an important detail. These programs, followed with interest and curiosity in many countries around the world, probably make everyone think, “I wish I could compete there” or “I wish I were there to experience the council’s excitement.” Well, Acun Medya and the AF travel team have not remained indifferent to this and offer these experiences as tourist products both in incentive travels and package tour programs for Turkish guests and visitors from different countries.
Yes, let’s invite you to get to know the Dominican Republic closely.
The Dominican Republic is not just about the sea, sand, and sun. The country is also significant due to its political and economic developments, migration structure, and its position in Latin America. In this article, I will strive to shed light on the Dominican Republic in all its aspects, both from a tourist and social-political perspective.
From Paradise Beaches to Colonial Cities
The Dominican Republic offers numerous natural wonders, historical areas, and vibrant cities to explore:
- Punta Cana: One of the most famous vacation regions in the Caribbean. Known for luxury hotels, endless beaches, and water sports.
- Santo Domingo: The capital and the Zona Colonial, on the UNESCO World Heritage List, one of the oldest settlements in the Americas. Here, you can visit historical structures like Alcazar de Colon, built by Christopher Columbus’s son, and the Cathedral of Santa Maria la Menor. You can spend a day or stay overnight in your travel plans.
- Samana: Famous for whale watching. Every year, from January to March, thousands of humpback whales migrate here to mate and give birth.
- La Romana and Altos de Chavon: Altos de Chavon, built in the style of a 16th-century Spanish village, attracts attention with its art galleries and stone architecture.
- Jarabacoa: The center of nature and adventure tourism in the Caribbean. Ideal for rafting, nature walks, and mountain sports.
- Bahia de las Aguilas: One of the most pristine and beautiful beaches in the Caribbean. Although hard to reach, it’s a perfect choice for nature lovers.
Dominican Cuisine: What to eat, what to drink?
Dominican cuisine is a fusion of African, Spanish, and native Taino cultures. Here are some flavors you must try:
- La Bandera: The traditional lunch of the country, consisting of rice, beans, and meat.
- Mangu: Boiled and mashed plantain, usually consumed for breakfast.
- Sancocho: A hearty and tasty stew made with various types of meat.
- Mofongo: Mashed plantain with garlic, a flavor shared with Puerto Rican cuisine.
- Mamajuana: A traditional Dominican drink made with rum, red wine, honey, and various herbs.
Where to stay?
- Punta Cana: Luxury resorts and all-inclusive hotels. The Hard Rock Hotel with 1,882 rooms virtually contains the world within itself, from various food and drink units to its unique beach, world-famous outlets, casino, and conference hall for 5,000 people. Don’t forget to attend a night at the Coco Bongo show, known for its music, dance, and spectacular performances.
- Santo Domingo: A mix of historic boutique hotels and large chain hotels.
- Cabarete and Sosua: Popular for surfing and water sports with budget accommodation options.
- Samana: Eco-hotels and facilities surrounded by nature.
Tourism structure and its economic importance
Tourism forms the backbone of the Dominican Republic’s economy, with approximately 10 million tourists visiting the country each year. The main tourist groups come from the U.S., Canada, Spain, Germany, France, and Latin American countries.
The country, with its all-inclusive hotel concept, nature tourism, and adventure sports, is one of the leading countries in the Caribbean in terms of tourism revenue.
Main tourist activities
- Diving and snorkeling: Amazing coral reefs in Sosua and Bayahibe.
- Kitesurfing and windsurfing: Cabarete is one of the best spots in the world for these sports.
- Cultural tours: Sugar cane fields and museums bearing traces of the native Taino people.
- Eco-tourism: Natural wonders like El Limón Waterfall and Los Haitises National Park.
Political developments and migration structure
The Dominican Republic has largely maintained its political and economic stability in recent years. However, the migration crisis at the Haitian border and regional trade balances continue to influence the country’s policy:
- Relations with Haiti: Migrants from Haiti provide significant labor in agriculture and construction, but the Dominican government takes harsh measures regarding illegal immigration and border security.
- Relations with the U.S. and Latin America: The country has strong economic ties with the USA, sustaining its growth through tourism and free trade agreements.
- Its place in Latin America: The Dominican Republic is one of the largest economies in the Caribbean and a leader in regional tourism.
The Dominican Republic, being one of the most sought-after tourism destinations in the Caribbean, is also an important part of the economic and political balance in Latin America. It attracts tourists with its natural beauty and draws attention to its political and economic developments.
As Turks, we can travel to this popular destination visa-free. While Turkish Airlines does not yet have direct flights, our national pride, which flies to more than 300 destinations across six continents, might start flights here soon. We eagerly await.
We made our flight with Turkish Airlines via Panama, staying two nights in Panama. You can plan your trip with two nights in Panama and four nights in the Dominican Republic for now.
If you’re planning a trip to the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic should be at the top of your list!
Until we meet at another destination.
