In the scenic coastal district of Bodrum, Türkiye, international tourists arriving on cruise ships are embracing a more active exploration through guided bike tours that immerse them in the area’s lush landscapes and rural charms.

Surge in nature tourism as Bodrum diversifies its offerings

With increased efforts to promote diverse tourism experiences, Bodrum has witnessed a notable rise in interest in cycling tours among cruise passengers. These excursions take participants through Bodrum’s countryside, allowing them to pedal past olive groves and forested areas for a close encounter with nature. Travelers leave with fond memories and a deeper appreciation of Bodrum’s beauty.

Ali Sonay, Vice Chair of the Nature and Adventure Tourism Committee at Türkiye’s Association of Travel Agencies (TURSAB), expressed enthusiasm for the growing number of cruise arrivals in Bodrum over the past two years.

“The increase in cruise ships has brought significant movement from April to November. We showcase rural areas to our visitors, hoping to boost rural tourism. The Karaova region, where we organize these tours, is ideal for both biking and hiking. We’re working to enhance this momentum and expand nature tourism even further,” Sonay told Anadolu Agency (AA).

Cyclists embrace Bodrum’s picturesque routes

One of the last cruise ships of the season, the Silver Spirit, recently arrived in Bodrum, bringing a group of mostly American tourists eager to experience the region’s cycling trails.

After clearing customs, the group traveled by minibus to Camlik Village, the starting point for a 30-kilometer (18.64-mile) bike ride.

Tour guide Oktay Elsever noted the rising interest in Bodrum’s natural tours, including cycling, as cruise tourism in the region grows.

“We anticipate that as Bodrum becomes a more popular cruise destination, activities like these bike tours will attract even more attention,” he said.

For tourists like Ann McDonald and Howard Marsh, the experience has been memorable. “I had a great time,” McDonald shared, remarking on her amazement at Bodrum’s natural scenery. Marsh echoed the sentiment, calling it “a unique experience” that left them both very satisfied.

Following their cycling adventure, the tourists returned to the town center, ready to continue their voyage with fond memories of Bodrum’s landscapes.
