A group of 42 Turkish students has commenced advanced nuclear energy studies in Russia to prepare for roles at the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), Türkiye’s first nuclear power plant currently under construction.

The program, organized by Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom, aims to develop qualified engineers for the plant.

Comprehensive education for future engineers

According to Akkuyu Nuclear AS, students are enrolled in master’s programs at the National Research Nuclear University (MEPhI) and the National Research University Moscow Power Engineering Institute.

  • Fields of study:
    • Nuclear Physics and Technology (14 students at MEPhI).
    • Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Thermal Energy Engineering, and Nuclear Energy Engineering (28 students at Moscow Power Engineering Institute).

The three-year program includes a one-year Russian language course, followed by specialized training in nuclear energy disciplines. The students’ master’s studies will continue for three years. They will spend a year improving their Russian language skills and will learn the basics of their specialty.

Support, career development

Akkuyu Nuclear’s Moscow office recently hosted a meeting for the students, program coordinators, and representatives from participating universities.

The session covered:

  • Details of the educational process.
  • Internship opportunities.
  • Career development at Akkuyu NPP.
  • Social support for young professionals.

Experienced engineers who graduated from the program shared insights about working in the nuclear sector and the benefits of Russian academic training.

Significant contribution to Türkiye’s nuclear sector

Akkuyu Nuclear AS General Director Sergei Butckikh highlighted that more than 300 engineers have already graduated from the program and are now contributing to the Akkuyu project.

We continue to fulfill our obligations under the intergovernmental agreement on the training of NPP operating personnel. More than 300 qualified engineers have already graduated from the program. All of them are employed in the project, working in the workshops of the Akkuyu NPP under construction and gaining unique experience that they can use in the future for the benefit of their country.

Deep theoretical knowledge of engineering disciplines allows Turkish specialists to actively participate in project life and even win prestigious professional awards.

I wish all the new participants of the program succeed in their studies.

Sergei Butckikh, General Director of Akkuyu Nuclear
