Known as the gateway to Cappadocia, Aksaray is home to the world’s second-largest canyon, Ihlara Valley, a natural wonder that draws visitors year-round. Located in the Guzelyurt district of Aksaray, Ihlara Valley, with its breathtaking natural beauty, has become a must-see destination for both local and international tourists.

Aksaray, rich in historical and cultural heritage, hosts approximately 1.5 million tourists annually. Among the region’s standout attractions, Ihlara Valley stands as a geological marvel. Formed over thousands of years by the erosion caused by the Melendiz River, following tectonic activity and volcanic eruptions from Mount Hasan, the valley stretches for 14 kilometers.

Visitors descend 382 steps to enter this remarkable site, which is not only admired for its natural scenery but also for its historical significance, housing 105 churches and around 10,000 cave dwellings.

Osman Aslan, a 45-year-old visitor, remarked, “Ihlara Valley is stunning, an incredible asset for Aksaray. However, I believe it could benefit from more investment in tourism infrastructure.” First-time visitor Hakan Karakaya, 44, added, “It’s my first time here, and I highly recommend it. The natural beauty is extraordinary, though the hike is a bit challenging.”

Murat Goc, 45, visiting from Istanbul with his family, shared, “As always, the experience is tiring but the scenery and the river make it all worth it. It’s peaceful but demanding.”

How to get to Ihlara Valley?

  • Traveling by air: If you’re flying from another city, you can land at Nevsehir Airport and reach Ihlara Valley by taxi or rental car. There are also buses departing from Nevsehir city center to Ihlara Valley.
  • Driving from Aksaray: If you’re coming from Aksaray city center, you can reach Ihlara Valley by car in approximately 50 minutes. Use a navigation system or ask locals for directions if you’re driving yourself.

What is entrance fee for Ihlara Valley in 2024?

The current entrance fee for Ihlara Valley is 330 ($9.7). If you have a Museum Card (MuzeKart), you can enter the valley without paying an additional fee.

Which churches can you visit in Ihlara Valley?

  • Sumbullu Church: Built in the 10th century, this church can be accessed through a narrow window. It is named after the local hyacinths.
  • Kokar Church: Expanded by carving into the rock in the ninth century, this church features two burial chambers and 11th-century frescoes.
  • Daniel Church: Also known as the Agacalti Church, it has a damaged main apse and side apses on the southern side. Inside, there are frescoes that date back to the ninth and 11th centuries.
  • Purenli Seki Church: Constructed in the 10th century, this church has four carved rock sections. Its frescoes are from the early 10th to the mid-12th century.
  • Egritas Church: One of the oldest structures in the valley, built in the ninth century. It is believed to be dedicated to the Virgin Mary, featuring important biblical scenes between angelic figures and six bishops.
