Influencers Elif Akcivi and Sema Mihalic are at the heart of a growing movement in Türkiye, where young people are proudly choosing rural lifestyles over city luxuries
A notable trend is emerging among the youth in Türkiye: abandoning the luxuries of city life for the simplicity of rural living.
Leading this movement are young influencers like Elif Akcivi and Sema Mihalic, who are both 24 and are redefining societal norms and perceptions about life in the countryside.
Elif Akcivi, popularly known as “Gezen Oglak” on social platforms, has captured the hearts of 1.5 million followers with her life in a tent in Kayrak village, Mersin. Her daily routine involves tending goats and fieldwork, a lifestyle choice she proudly shares on social media. Her journey from a university graduate to a committed Yoruk, a member of a Turkish nomadic tribe, reflects her deep connection with her roots and her passion for rural life.
Sema Mihalic, known as “Tezenegil,” has gained a significant following by showcasing her life in Egrigoz village, Eskisehir, with a touch of humor. Unlike her peers who pursue city jobs, Sema chose to return to her village and continue her family’s tradition of dairy farming.
She even quit a municipal job to focus on farming and is now furthering her education in veterinary science to care for her cattle more effectively.
Both Elif and Sema reflect a shift in attitudes toward rural living. They report that people now take pride in their village origins, a stark contrast to the earlier stigma attached to rural life.
They believe this change is not just a matter of individual choice but also carries a sense of duty to preserve and value traditional ways of life.
Their influence extends beyond social media. Sema is educating children about rural lifestyles and agriculture.
Through her project, she has introduced over 300 children to farm life, teaching them about the source of everyday food items and instilling a respect for agricultural work.
