Türkiye’s Sumela Monastery transforms into winter wonderland

The historic Sumela Monastery, located in the Macka district of Trabzon, has turned into a captivating winter wonderland following two days of snowfall.

Nestled on a steep cliff of Mount Karadag overlooking the Altindere Valley, this ancient structure, also known as “The Virgin Mary” among locals, sits approximately 300 meters above the valley floor. The monastery, carved into the rocks and surrounded by dense forest, now wears a pristine white coat, enhancing its mystical aura.

Captivating frescoes leave lasting impression

Yetis also found the frescoes on the monastery walls particularly striking. “It’s been an incredible experience for us,” she said.

Askin Tekdemir, who has a passion for historical sites, expressed his admiration for the snow-draped scenery. “The view is absolutely stunning,” he remarked.
