“Hayat,” directed by Zeki Demirkubuz, features young actors Miray Daner and Burak Dakak in the lead roles. The film tells the story of Hicran, a young woman forced into an engagement by her father. Unable to accept this fate, Hicran decides to flee from her home.
Her fianc, Riza, initially indifferent to her departure, gradually becomes troubled by the situation. He eventually decides to confront Hicran, leading him on a prolonged search through Istanbul. The film explores themes of personal freedom and the complex dynamics of forced relationships.

Zeki Demirkubuz returns to filmmaking with ‘Hayat’ after long hiatus
Zeki Demirkubuz, a veteran director with over 30 years of experience in the film industry, returned to filmmaking with “Hayat” after an extended break. Speaking about the film, Demirkubuz expressed his excitement, noting that this project allowed him to explore a different tone compared to his previous works.
He said, “Life softens a person; I agree that ‘Hayat’ is not as dark as my earlier films. I think this is a good thing. You get bored when you keep repeating yourself as the same person.”
Despite his long career, Demirkubuz admitted that he still feels a sense of vulnerability when presenting his films to audiences. He explained, “In fact, this feeling also keeps me alive. I believe that a person should live with a bit of shame or guilt, not just in these matters but in life as well.”
Comparison to last year’s entry, Türkiye’s ongoing Oscar aspirations
“Hayat” follows last year’s entry, “Kuru Otlar Ustune,” directed by Nuri Bilge Ceylan, which was also Türkiye’s contender for the Best International Feature Film at the Oscars. This consistent participation reflects Türkiye’s dedication to bringing its cinematic talent to the global stage.
The 97th Academy Awards will take place on March 2, 2025, and Türkiye’s film industry, led by Demirkubuz’s Hayat, aims to make a significant impact in the Best International Feature Film category.
