The Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Turkey added a new one to the return of artifacts illegally smuggled abroad in the past years and announced that Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy received the first artifact return of 2024 in the UK via the social media platform X

Turkiye’s Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy announced the return of the first artifact in 2024 in collaboration with the U.K.’s Metropolitan Police on the social media platform X.

The ministry has successfully recovered 15,000 smuggled artifacts over a period of 15 years. This achievement highlights Turkiye’s commitment to combatting illicit trafficking and preserving its cultural heritage.

In 2021, a 6th century B.C. “torso of Kore,” smuggled from Turkiye, was identified in London. It was received by the Ambassador of Turkiye to London Osman Koray Ertaş at a ceremony held at the embassy.
