Sezen Aksu, a defining figure in Turkish pop music, is making a highly anticipated return with a new album after a five-year break.

The artist, who is turning 70 this year, recorded “Pasa Gonlumun Sarkilari” (loosely translated as “Songs of My Free Spirit”), which includes newly arranged versions of eight of her previous songs and three entirely new tracks.

One of the biggest surprises in the album is Aksu’s tribute to Ferdi Tayfur, a legendary figure in arabesque music who passed away on Jan. 2, 2025.

Aksu recorded one of Tayfur’s songs, a project she had wanted to pursue for a long time. After Tayfur’s passing, Aksu expressed her admiration, saying, “Thank you for all the beauty you brought into our lives, Ferdi Tayfur… We will miss you.”

Sezen Aksu honors Ferdi Tayfur by reinterpreting one of his songs

Sezen Aksu and Ferdi Tayfur had different musical styles, but they deeply respected each other’s work.

Aksu admired Tayfur’s music and had long planned to reinterpret one of his songs. Including one of his pieces in her new album is a way for her to pay respect to his legacy and introduce his music to a broader audience.

Fans eagerly await the album, which brings together well-loved songs in a new form and fresh material that reflects Aksu’s distinctive style.

Whether through familiar melodies with a new approach or through her latest creations, “Pasa Gonlumun Sarkilari” reinforces Sezen Aksu’s lasting influence on Turkish music.
