Tol Han: Türkiye’s 800-year-old heritage spot captivates nature lovers
The 800-year-old Tol Han in Antalya’s Ibradi district is capturing the attention of nature lovers and photographers with its enduring historical essence and striking architecture.
Situated in the picturesque Eynif Plain, where wild horses roam freely, Tol Han stands as a testament to the architectural prowess of the Anatolian Seljuks. Historical records attribute its construction to Sultan Alaaddin Keykubat I, who reigned from 1220 to 1237.
Once a crucial stop on a major trade route, Tol Han served as a sanctuary for caravans traversing the mountainous terrain to reach the fertile plains below. Its enduring stone arches, robust walls and gateways reflect the classic Seljuk design and continue to inspire awe in visitors today.
Timeless attraction
Despite the passage of centuries, Tol Han’s resilience draws in history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. The wild horses of the Taurus Mountains add a dynamic backdrop, offering visitors an unforgettable experience that combines natural beauty with historical intrigue.
Many visitors photograph the untouched remnants of the caravanserai while marveling at the sense of time travel the site evokes.
‘Natural, historical treasure’
Ibradi Mayor Hatice Sekmen highlighted the unique charm of the district, describing it as an open-air museum.
“Tol Han is one of many cultural treasures in the area,” Sekmen explained.
“Although partially ruined, its remains still exude a natural beauty and historical significance. It is a protected site, and plans are underway by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism for excavation and restoration projects.”
Sekmen expressed hope that these initiatives will preserve Tol Han for future generations while enhancing the region’s appeal for cultural tourism.
“This site is crucial for maintaining our heritage and sharing it with the world. Visitors spend time exploring the area, taking photographs, and observing the wild horses. It’s easily accessible and an essential stop for those seeking history and natural beauty,” Sekmen added.
