Sultan Mehmed II honored on 563rd anniversary of Trabzon’s conquest
The 563rd anniversary of Trabzon’s conquest was celebrated with fervor in the historic city, known for its rich cultural heritage.
The festivities included a “Conquest March,” which captivated the attention of Trabzon’s residents.
The march, which began on Kahramanmaras Avenue, featured a symbolic portrayal of Sultan Mehmed II, along with Aksemseddin, janissary soldiers, and female archers dressed in Ottoman attire, all accompanied by an enthusiastic mehteran band.
Trabzon locals joined the march with Turkish flags in hand, reliving a significant historical moment. The event concluded at Ganita Park after proceeding through Gazi Pasha Avenue.
Attendees included Trabzon Governor Aziz Yildirim, Trabzon Deputy Mayor Faruk Kanca, Provincial Gendarmerie Commander Brigadier General Mustafa Erdem, Provincial Police Chief Murat Eserturk, and numerous citizens.
Following a performance by the mehteran band, Governor Yildirim highlighted Trabzon’s historical significance: “Trabzon is a city of immense historical importance, conquered by Sultan Mehmed II, governed by Yavuz Sultan Selim, the birthplace of Suleiman the Magnificent, and visited three times by Atatürk. These lands were made our homeland by great commanders and their successors. Today, it is our duty to protect this invaluable heritage.”
Trabzon Deputy Mayor Faruk Kanca emphasized the city’s ancient history, stating: “Sultan Mehmed II, who famously conquered Constantinople at the age of 21, knew that the conquest would be incomplete without taking Trabzon. He personally led his army, besieged the city by land and sea, and on Aug. 15, 1461, achieved its conquest. This was not just a military victory but a conquest of hearts.”
The celebrations concluded with a concert by Turkish folk music artist Orhan Hakalmaz, as the people of Trabzon honored their city’s past with pride and enthusiasm.
