A movement in Russia, known as the “Russia Veterans,” has called for the banning of Turkish TV series, claiming they threaten the country’s traditional values. The group presented an official request to the Ministry of Culture, demanding the regulation of foreign productions.

The grassroots group, Russia Veterans, has formally urged the Ministry of Culture to ban Turkish TV series in the country. They argue that these series undermine Russian society’s traditional values and promote negative behavioral models. The group claims that these foreign shows distort reality and lead to the creation of unrealistic ideals.

Foreign behavior models being imposed

In their petition to Culture Minister Olga Lyubimova, Russia Veterans also called for oversight of all foreign productions that “create destructive images and harm traditional values.”

The group stated, “Turkish series create an artificial image of an ideal person that is far removed from the realities of Russian life.”

Traditional family structures under threat

According to the group, Turkish series are putting Russian society’s traditional family structures at risk and contributing to the nation’s demographic decline.

They argue, “Women who watch these series lose interest in their fellow citizens and seek the idealized image portrayed on screen outside the country.”

Foreign heroes glorified over Russian characters

Russia Veterans also criticized the portrayal of male characters in Russian series, claiming that they are often depicted negatively as alcoholics and failures. In contrast, foreign heroes, particularly from Turkish shows, are presented as successful and attractive.

The group argued, “While Russian series depict our men as alcoholics and losers, foreign heroes are glorified.”

What will be future of Turkish TV series in Russia?

While no official response has come from Russian authorities yet, the Ministry of Culture’s reaction to the petition remains uncertain.

Turkish TV series have enjoyed massive popularity in Russia, consistently ranking among the most-watched foreign productions in the country.
