Restoration of Edirne’s Ottoman-era Mezitbey bathhouse underway

The restoration at Mezitbey bathhouse (Hammam) carried out within the scope of the Selimiye Square Landscaping Project in Edirne, is underway.

The Provincial Special Administration of the Governorship of Edirne is restoring the bathhouse, which is expected to be completed within a year.

Restoration of Havlucular Inn, near the historical bathhouse, is carried out simultaneously.

Mezitbey Hammam

Located west of Selimiye Mosque and east of Eski Mosque, the Mezitbey bathhouse is one of the architectural spectacles brought to the city by Sultan Murad II in the 15th century.

Mezitbey bathhouse, which is simpler than other hammams in Edirne, has a rectangular dressing room with a wooden ceiling.

In the center, the bath, which is covered by a large and pendant dome (an architectural transition element that allows a dome to sit on a square-planned structure), is expanded with iwans on both sides.

One of the essential buildings reflecting the historical texture of Edirne, the bathhouse offers visitors the opportunity to experience Ottoman-period bath traditions with historical architecture.
