Rare Michelangelo sketch up for auction for less than $10,000
At Christie’s A Park Avenue Collection auction in April, a sketch drawn by Michelangelo himself, which has been in a private collection for a long time, will also be offered for sale
The work, attributed to a friend of Michelangelo’s and drawn by Michelangelo himself and attached to the back of the work, will be auctioned at Christie’s A Park Avenue Collection auction in April.
Michelangelo’s small block sketch and accompanying letter will be offered as a single lot with an estimate of under $10,000.
The opening price is said to be a far cry from the auction record set by Michelangelo’s recently rediscovered drawing, which fetched $21 million at Christie’s in 2022.
Though it is unsigned by the great artist, Christie’s said it guarantees it is “100% Michelangelo.”
Rare paintings and drawings by the masters are planned to be sold at the auction, along with Chinese artworks and 18th-century French furniture.
Although Michelangelo is known to have destroyed most of his sketches and drawings before he died in 1564, over 200 pages have been recovered and are now on display at the Casa Buonarroti, a museum in Florence dedicated to Michelangelo’s work.
