In an exciting archaeological development, excavations around Yamula Dam in Kayseri have uncovered more than 100 fossils this year, dating back approximately 7.5 million years. The findings include a variety of animal fossils, primarily focusing on three-toed horses, giraffes, rhinoceroses, and carnivorous species.

Expert anthropologist Omer Dag, who oversees the project, explained that the fossils found in the region exhibit excellent preservation conditions. “This location is rich in diversity, allowing for the discovery of multiple specimens, many of which are nearly complete. This year’s highlight is a remarkable pig skull, a rare find that is particularly valuable,” Dag noted.

The ongoing excavation work, led by the Kayseri Museum Directorate, has been praised for its productivity this year. “We have more than 100 fossils at our disposal. The three-toed horses (Hipparion group) and giraffes, known as giraffa, dominate this year’s findings. However, the intact pig skull is a significant discovery for us,” he added.

Unique location for fossil discovery

Dag emphasized the richness of Türkiye’s paleontological resources, stating that the region serves as a vital transitional area for various species.

“Türkiye is known for its rich fossil density. This location is unique; its fossils are remarkably well-preserved and diverse,” he explained. He also highlighted the significance of the pig skull and a nearly complete elephant skull found during this year’s excavations, stating, “Such complete specimens are rare globally, making this location extremely valuable.”

International attention on Kayseri fossils

The fossil discoveries have attracted international interest, with specialists visiting from abroad. “This year, a specialist from Finland has returned to conduct research. Previous visits have demonstrated the site’s importance, as the variety and quantity of findings cannot be fully explored in just one trip,” Dag noted.

He mentioned ongoing efforts to prepare the fossils for display in the upcoming Paleontology Museum. “We are working on the conservation of original fossils while creating models to help visitors understand the anatomical features of the animals. This process will allow guests to visualize the size and morphology of these creatures,” Dag explained.
