The digital streaming platform Netflix has found itself at the center of controversy after removing 30 out of 32 films from its “Palestinian Stories” collection. This decision has sparked outrage among Turkish users, who are now canceling their subscriptions in response.

Many have taken to social media to voice their disapproval, with comments writing, “It is unacceptable for Netflix, as a global platform, to silence productions that represent the voice of Palestine.”

Controversial past

This is not the first time Netflix has attracted criticism in Türkiye. Previously, the platform faced disapproval for the series “Famagusta,” which was accused of distorting the events of the 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation and portraying Turkish soldiers in a negative light.

Following this, the President of the Turkish Radio and Television Supreme Council, Ebubekir Sahin, announced that the anti-Türkiye series would not be broadcast in the country.

Sudden removal of films

Netflix has been accused of anti-Palestinian sentiment due to its recent actions. The platform quietly removed a selection of 32 films showcasing the lives of Palestinians, first introduced in 2021.

As users noticed this change, they initiated calls for a boycott and started a petition for the films to be reinstated.

Netflix responds to criticism

In response to the uproar, Netflix issued a statement explaining, “This licensed movie collection was released in 2021 for a three-year period. The licenses have now expired. As always, we continue to invest in a diverse range of high-quality films and TV shows to meet our members’ needs and celebrate voices from around the world.”

Turkish Officials Condemn the Action

Batuhan Mumcu, the Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism, expressed his discontent with Netflix’s actions on social media.

He stated, “What is happening, Netflix? You participated in the effort to portray our glorious Turkish soldiers as occupiers in Cyprus, and we warned you! Now, what does it mean to quietly remove 30 out of 32 films from the ‘Palestinian Stories’ collection? You are either distorting historical facts or attempting to cover up the oppression happening right before the eyes of the world! This latest move is a significant disrespect to artists and producers trying to be the voice of the Palestinian people. It is unacceptable for Netflix, as a global platform, to silence productions that represent the voice of Palestine!”

Growing boycott movement

The removal of these films has led many users to announce their intention to cancel their subscriptions, further fueling the conversation on social media.

Netflix is now facing mounting pressure as the backlash continues.
