American rapper and producer Lil Jon converts to Islam during a visit to mosque in California
American rapper and producer Lil Jon has embraced Islam, declaring his conversion during a visit to a mosque in California on Friday.
The famed artist made his declaration of faith prior to Friday prayers, at the King Fahad Mosque in Los Angeles, amidst a gathering of worshippers.
In a video circulating on social media, Lil Jon could be seen reciting the Islamic declaration of faith, known as the Shahada, first in Arabic and then in English, under the guidance of the mosque’s imam.
Born in 1972 in Atlanta, Georgia, under the name Jonathan H. Smith, the rapper gained prominence in the early 2000s for his pioneering role in promoting the subgenre of hip-hop. Known for his energetic persona and distinctive “crunk” style, Lil Jon’s music has left an indelible mark on the hip-hop landscape.
With his Instagram exceeding one million followers, nearly 8 million monthly listeners on Spotify, and a known interest in mystical beliefs, Lil Jon recently garnered attention for his meditation album, which received widespread acclaim.
Following in the footsteps of American writer and activist Shaun King, Lil Jon becomes the second known American to embrace Islam during the first week of Ramadan, marking a significant personal and public milestone for the artist.
