Izmir’s famous cat: Garfield lookalike charms visitors at Kemeralti bazaar
In the historic Kemeralti bazaar of Türkiye’s Izmir, where the Kizlaragasi Han has stood since 1745, a one-eyed, chubby famous cat named Tarcin has captivated both locals and tourists for 17 years.
With his orange fur and plump physique, Tarcin bears an uncanny resemblance to the beloved cartoon character Garfield and has become a beloved figure in this bustling marketplace.
Tarcin first arrived at Kizlaragasi Han as a kitten and quickly made the marketplace his home. Each morning, as shopkeepers open their doors, Tarcin eagerly awaits his breakfast, making his rounds among the vendors.
His distinct appearance makes him easy to spot as he strolls through the two-story marketplace, entering and exiting shops with the familiarity of a long-time resident.
The shopkeepers at Kizlaragasi Han, which primarily sells souvenirs, jewelry, and other trinkets, consider Tarcin part of their community.
“Tarcin eats, drinks, and rests with us,” said Ozgul Yilmaz, who has been selling jewelry and gifts at Kizlaragasi Han for two decades. “Everyone here knows him. Even on weekends when we’re not around, our security guard makes sure he’s well-fed.”
Visitors to the Han often find themselves drawn to Tarcin, with some even making special trips just to see him. Yilmaz noted that people frequently ask about him, particularly those who return to the area after years away.
“Students who have graduated and moved on come back with their families and ask, ‘Is Tarcin still here?'” she said.
The cat’s fame has even reached international tourists, who have been known to visit just to catch a glimpse of him.
Despite the attention, Tarcin maintains a certain aloofness. Onur Kapakli, another shopkeeper, commented on the famous cat’s independent nature. “People love him, but he doesn’t always return the attention. He doesn’t even stop for those who try to pet him,” Kapakli said.
Tarcin’s caretakers have ensured that he is well taken care of over the years.
They groom and vaccinate him every summer. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, when restrictions were tight, the shopkeepers obtained special permission to enter the market and care for him.
