Historic remains of city walls stretching to Tavsan Island have been exposed as the sea level recedes in Bodrum.

Bodrum, a popular destination in Türkiye known for its historical and natural beauty, is witnessing an awe-inspiring natural phenomenon. The event, which occasionally occurs in Gumusluk Neighborhood, is revealing ancient structures submerged beneath the sea.

Ancient city walls from 4th century BC unearthed in Bodrum

The drop in seawater levels is uncovering city walls extending to Tavsan Island, believed to date back to the fourth century B.C.

These ancient remains are part of the Mydos (Tavsan) Island, providing a rare glimpse into the island’s historical past.

Stunning view captivates visitors

Locals and tourists flock to the area to admire and capture the sight of the ancient walls. Emin Savas, a dentist who visited the region with friends, shared his astonishment.

“When the waters recede, this path appears. Over there is Tavsan Island, an incredible view. It’s a natural wonder. Every part of our country is amazing,” he expressed.

Mujdat Sungur, a local resident of Bodrum, recalled his experiences on the waters. “I had a boat in this area, and I used to row around the island. Now, with the water pulled back, it’s no longer possible,” he said, reflecting on how the changing sea levels have altered the landscape.
