The Haci Evliya Fountain, a historic landmark from the 17th century located in the Fatih district of Istanbul, has been moved to a new site due to increased traffic and urban development.

The fountain was carefully relocated with the help of cranes.

How was fountain moved?

The relocation process involved meticulous preparation. Initially, the bottom part of the fountain was cut using diamond-tipped wires.

Then, with the aid of cranes, the fountain, weighing 70 tons, was lifted and moved to a safe distance to its new location, preserving its structural integrity. It will resume its water flow once the relocation work is complete.

Fatih Municipality’s commitment to cultural heritage

Mehmet Ozcelik, deputy mayor of Fatih Municipality, emphasized the importance of preserving Istanbul’s cultural heritage: “A significant portion of Istanbul’s cultural heritage is located in Fatih. As Fatih Municipality, we aim to preserve and pass on this heritage to future generations. We have now activated the water flow for our 100th fountain, and this is a major achievement for us.”

Details of relocation process

Associate professor Mehmet Selim Okten from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University provided details on the relocation process: “The Haci Evliya Fountain was relocated due to increased traffic and urbanization posing a risk to the historic structure. We decided to move it in its original form using diamond-tipped wires to cut it from the bottom. It was then transported with two cranes to its new location, ensuring its structural integrity was maintained. The fountain weighs approximately 70 tons and was moved three meters back.”

Sumeyye Meryem Arslan, head of Cultural Heritage Protection Department at Fatih Municipality, shared insights on the fountain’s history: “The Haci Evliya Fountain, part of a small kulliye constructed in the 17th century, was repaired in the 19th century. Some additional structures were removed to reveal the original design of the fountain. We have ensured that it remains true to its original form and will continue to serve as a cultural heritage for many years to come.”

This significant cultural asset in Fatih will continue to operate in its new location, preserving traces of history for future generations.
