Boston-based auction firm RR Auction recently put up for auction a haunting relic from history: a watch that melted during the devastating atomic bomb attack on Hiroshima, Japan, on Aug. 6, 1945. The timepiece, frozen at 8:15 a.m., the exact moment of the bomb’s detonation, fetched a staggering $31,113 from a buyer eager to own a piece of this tragic event’s legacy.”
The name of the highest bidder for the watch, which sheds light on the destruction caused by nuclear weapons, was not disclosed. In a statement released by RR Auction, it was noted that the watch was recovered from the ruins by a British soldier who went to the region on a relief mission after the atomic bomb attack.
Japan was targeted by atomic bombs
On Aug. 6, 1945, the U.S. used atomic bombs against Japan for the first time in world history.
The Hiroshima attack killed nearly 140,000 people and caused hundreds of thousands of injuries and radiation-induced illnesses.
