Exploring Ottoman Macedonia: Exhibition opens in Istanbul

A new exhibition titled “Documents and Photographs from the Ottoman Era in Macedonia” has opened its doors in Istanbul. This collaborative effort, organized by the Presidency of the Republic of Türkiye State Archives and the State Archives of North Macedonia, offers a unique chance to explore Macedonia’s rich heritage during the Ottoman period.

Historical documents and photographs on display

Located at the Ottoman Archives Department in Kagithane, Istanbul, this exhibition features 80 photographs and 28 documents including imperial decrees, charters, endowment deeds, historical bridges, school photographs and daily life scenes.

Prior to the opening, professor Ugur Unal, head of the State Archives, expressed his pleasure in inaugurating the exhibition, highlighting the significance of archival documents in understanding history accurately.

He emphasized, “These documents not only preserve national and international memory but also serve as valuable cultural and historical treasures.”

Diplomatic significance and collaboration

Unal underscored the diplomatic significance of the exhibition, stating, “These documents demonstrate the Ottoman Empire’s inclusive, tolerant approach respecting the religious and cultural diversity of its people.” He praised the longstanding collaboration between Turkish and North Macedonian archive institutions, noting its positive impact on bilateral relations.

The State Archives houses over 130 million documents, including significant sources related to the Ottoman presence in Macedonia since the 15th century. Likewise, North Macedonian archives preserve numerous documents reflecting its history under Ottoman rule.

Highlighting specific exhibits, Unal pointed out examples such as Sultan II. Abdulhamid’s decree addressing losses in a fire in Manastir, and Sultan Abdulaziz’s directive to build a school in Skopje due to inadequate facilities for Christian children, illustrating the Ottoman policy of Pax Ottomana.

Promoting mutual understanding

The exhibition aims to foster mutual understanding and contribute to the development of relations between Türkiye and North Macedonia. Hrista Najdanov, head of the State Archives of North Macedonia, expressed his honor in attending the opening and announced plans to host the exhibition in North Macedonia soon.

Following the speeches, Cevat Ekici, head of the External Relations and Promotion Department at the Presidency of the State Archives, provided insights into the exhibited photographs and documents. The opening ceremony was attended by Deputy President of the State Archives Sabahattin Bayram, Consul General of North Macedonia in Istanbul Idris Fazlioski, Director of the State Archives of North Macedonia Adnan Serif and archive professionals from both countries involved in preparing the exhibition.
