Exhibition of timeless Istanbul: 125 photos of Türkiye’s changing landscapes
Veteran photographer Izzet Keribar has spent more than half a century capturing the world through his lens.
Now, Istanbul Modern is exhibiting 125 curated images selected from Keribar’s vast archive of 1.5 million photographs, taken both in Türkiye and across the globe.
The exhibition, titled “Izzet Keribar: Journey of Colors“, invites visitors to explore scenes from the 1950s to today, many on display for the first time.
The collection spans different eras and locations, from Keribar’s time as a volunteer in the Korean War to historical architecture in Uzbekistan and from a cabin on the slopes of Mount Ararat to the streets of Diyarbakir. Each photo brings its own perspective on color, while some impress with strong graphic elements.
Istanbul’s evolution through Keribar’s lens with views of past and present
A unique element of the exhibit lies in Istanbul Modern’s gallery layout: visitors can look out to see the modern city through its windows, while the walls are lined with images of Istanbul’s past – fishermen, boats, and familiar faces from the city’s older neighborhoods. This arrangement offers a visual narrative of Istanbul’s transformation over the years.
At the exhibition’s opening, Keribar shared his motivations behind decades of work. “Throughout my life, I’ve tried to see the world from different perspectives in each photograph,” he remarked.
“I have especially focused on capturing Türkiye’s nature, landmarks, historical sites and people in their best light so that our country is better recognized around the world. I’m still committed to this mission today.”
