77th Cannes Film Festival, the most prestigious event in the world of cinema, begins

This year, actress Gerwig is the president of the jury which has 9 jury members.

Ebru Ceylan jury member

Among the jury members of the main competition of the festival is screenwriter and photographer Ebru Ceylan, wife of the famous director Nuri Bilge Ceylan.

The jury also includes American actress Lily Gladstone, French actress Eva Green, Lebanese screenwriter and director Nadine Labaki, Spanish director, producer and screenwriter Juan Antonio Bayona, Italian actor Pierfrancesco Favino, Japanese director Kore-eda Hirokazu and French actor and producer Omar Sy.

22 films will compete for the Palme d’Or

This year, 22 films will compete for the Palme d’Or, awarded last year by jury president Ruben Ostlund to Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall.”

The festival will open with Quentin Dupieux’s French comedy “The Second Act” (Le deuxieme Acte).

French actress, director, screenwriter and producer Judith Godreche’s short film focusing on the stories of victims of sexual violence will also be screened as part of the festival.

On May 25, awards will be presented at the closing ceremony of the festival.

Strike call could disrupt the festival

The 77th Cannes Film Festival may experience disruptions due to the strike call of cinema and festival workers.

Last week, the film workers’ collective “Poverty Behind the Screens” (Sous les Ecrans la Deche) called for a strike involving festival staff and other film workers that could “disrupt the event.”

The management of the Cannes Film Festival made a statement to the Hollywood news website Deadline about the planned strike by festival workers over inadequate wages and unemployment insurance.

“They are aware of the difficulties faced by staff working under contract for film festivals, who are affected by the French unemployment insurance reform and have to deal with the reduction in their social rights,” the statement said, adding that they are ready to establish dialogue to solve the problem.

The Audiovisual and Cinema Professionals branch of the General Labor Union (CGT) posted on social media that they support the planned strike by festival workers.

The first Cannes Film Festival was held in 1946

First planned for September 1-20, 1939, the Cannes Film Festival was canceled that year due to the Second World War.

After the war, the first Cannes Film Festival was organized in 1946. Until 1954, the “Grand Prize” of the festival was presented to the best director participating in the festival.

The “Palme d’Or” award, which has become the symbol of the festival, was first awarded in 1955 to American director Delbert Mann’s “Marty”, a romantic drama.

The Palme d’Or award represents the palm on the coat of arms of the city of Cannes.

Türkiye won the award for the first time in 1982 with Yılmaz Guney’s “Put” and in 2014 Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s “Winter Sleep” was awarded the Palme d’Or.
