As part of the project “Digital Footprint of Cultural Heritage,” initiated by class teacher Esra Topbas, 20 students from three countries traveled to Gaziantep with their teachers to learn about Türkiye’s rich cultural heritage.

Supported by the European Union, the initiative aims to revive and promote cultural values that are at risk of being forgotten.

The students attended workshops at the Jale Tekinalp Yucel Culture and Art Center, organized by the Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality, where they learned the techniques and significance of mosaic art.

‘Keeping cultural values alive,’ says project leader

Speaking to the Anadolu Agency (AA), Esra Topbas highlighted the importance of preserving cultural heritage, stating, “Mosaic art is one of the first things that comes to mind when you think of Gaziantep’s cultural legacy.

We are trying to sustain and promote these cultural values that are on the brink of disappearing. Through this project, we also gained insight into the cultural heritage of our European guests.”

‘Thrilled to be in Türkiye,’ says Romanian participant

Monica Iuliana Onica, a participant from Romania, expressed her delight at being part of the project.

“I am very happy to be here in Türkiye and to have experienced the best project mobility here. I loved Gaziantep, and it’s a pleasure for our students to be here. The saying ‘Istanbul is the world’s meeting point’ is so true. We will continue to collaborate with our partners in Türkiye because this country is rich in music, art, and culture. We have had an amazing time here,” she shared.

Mosaic art as a bridge between cultures

Gulcin Sokucu, a mosaic artist and the coordinator of the center, emphasized the unifying power of the art.

“Today, many young people from Europe joined us. Mosaic art, as always, served as a bridge, bringing together diverse colors and cultures. Many of them documented their experience, leaving a digital footprint behind. We shared the techniques, historical significance, and local importance of this craft. Through this activity, they realized how valuable and special this art form is,” Sokucu added.

In addition to the workshops, the students had the opportunity to explore the historical and tourist attractions of Gaziantep, further enriching their cultural experience.

The “Digital Footprint of Cultural Heritage” project not only revived interest in the ancient craft of mosaics but also succeeded in building cultural bridges. As the participants return to their home countries, they carry with them not only new artistic skills but also a deeper appreciation of Gaziantep’s and Türkiye’s, rich cultural tapestry.
