The 8th International Ephesus Opera and Ballet Festival is set to captivate audiences in the stunning atmosphere of the ancient Ephesus Theater. Organized by the State Opera and Ballet Directorate, the festival will run from June 27 to July 13, promising an extraordinary lineup of performances.

Tan Sagturk, general director of State Opera and Ballet, emphasized the festival’s growing international recognition, stating, “With the participation of world-renowned artists, we are turning Türkiye into a leading arts destination.”

A grand celebration of opera and ballet

This year’s festival boasts an expanded program featuring three operas, two ballets, a musical, and a children’s opera. Highlights include:

  • Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake”, which will open the festival
  • Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana”
  • Mozart’s “The Abduction from the Seraglio”
  • Mikis Theodorakis’ “Zorba” ballet
  • “La Traviata” and “Ask-i Memnu” operas
  • The children’s opera “Sekeronya”

Sagturk noted that audience interest played a crucial role in curating this year’s repertoire, ensuring an enriching experience for both classical enthusiasts and newcomers.

Ephesus Opera and Ballet Festival: A cultural hub for global artists

The festival has cemented its status as a major event in the international art scene.

“Last year, participating artists expressed their admiration, saying they wished to return because Türkiye provides some of the world’s most beautiful stages,” Sagturk revealed.

This year, the festival will welcome celebrated performers such as renowned ballet dancers Daniil Simkin, Iana Salenko, and opera star Zeljko Lucic.

A boost for tourism and cultural heritage

Beyond its artistic significance, the festival contributes significantly to tourism. Sagturk highlighted ongoing restoration efforts at the Ephesus Theater, led by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, ensuring optimal conditions for both performers and spectators. “By the festival’s start, restorations will be complete, offering audiences an even more immersive experience,” he said.

The event is part of a broader initiative that includes major festivals such as the International Istanbul Opera and Ballet Festival, the Aspendos Opera and Ballet Festival, the Bodrum Ballet Festival, and the Anadolu Opera and Ballet Festival—each showcasing Türkiye’s rich cultural tapestry.

From Grand Bazaar to Opera House

Sagturk envisions a future where visitors to Türkiye explore not only historic sites like the Grand Bazaar but also world-class opera and ballet performances.

“These festivals serve as a bridge for international cultural dialogue, solidifying Türkiye’s place on the global arts map,” he asserted.

A spectacle not to be missed

The 8th International Ephesus Opera and Ballet Festival will commence on June 27 with “Swan Lake” and conclude on July 13. With its blend of history, artistry, and world-class performances, the festival promises an unforgettable experience for all attendees.
