Colossal Atlas statue returns to Temple of Zeus in Sicily, following extensive reconstruction
Centuries-old Atlas statue after meticulous reconstruction, the towering figure returns to Agrigento’s Temple of Zeus, enriching Sicily’s cultural legacy
After centuries buried among ancient ruins, a colossal statue of the Greek titan Atlas has been meticulously reconstructed to reclaim its place at the Temple of Zeus in Agrigento, Sicily.
Standing tall at 8 meters (26ft) and dating back to the 5th century BC, this imposing figure was one of nearly 38 statues adorning the Temple of Zeus, believed to be the largest Doric temple ever constructed, though left unfinished.
Francesco Paolo Scarpinato, a cultural heritage assessor, alongside Sicilia governor Renato Schifani, declared, “The reintroduction of Atlas will undoubtedly elevate the Valley of the Temples to new heights, serving as a testament to our rich cultural heritage.”
This monumental restoration project, spanning two decades, now welcomes Atlas back to the international stage.
