A provocative protest at the Louvre Museum links art with activism, as ‘Food Riposte’ activists make a statement to draw attention to the struggles of French farmers under current agricultural policies

Two climate activists from the “Food Riposte” group targeted the iconic Mona Lisa painting at the Louvre Museum in Paris, casting a spotlight on ongoing agricultural protests across France.

The protesters hurled soup at the bulletproof glass protecting Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece, sharing their demand for a sustainable food system.

These protesters managed to bypass a security barrier to approach the painting successfully.

Their act of defiance was accompanied by chants questioning the prioritization of art over the right to healthy and sustainable food.

They emphasized the plight of the farming community, lamenting, “Our farming system is sick. Our farmers are dying at work.”

In response, Louvre staff quickly shielded the Mona Lisa with black panels and evacuated visitors from the room. Notably, the protective glass prevented any damage to the painting.

Simultaneously, French farmers have been protesting for days, using their tractors to create road blockades nationwide.

Their grievances include low wages, rising costs, excessive regulations, and competition from cheap imports.

Despite recent government measures, farmers contend that their demands remain unaddressed, with some threatening to intensify protests by converging on Paris.
