Assumption ceremony held at Türkiye’s famous House of Virgin Mary
A special ceremony was held at the House of the Virgin Mary in Selcuk, Izmir, believed to be the final residence of the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus Christ. The ceremony marked the Christian holy day known as the “Assumption of Blessed Virgin Mary.”
Hundreds of Christians from around the world gathered at this sacred site to commemorate the day, also referred to as the “Feast of the Assumption.”
The service was led by Archbishop of Reims Mgr Eric de Moulins-Beaufort and president of the French Bishops’ Conference.
Passages from the Bible were read, hymns were sung, and prayers were offered during the ceremony.
During and after the service, pilgrims lit candles and recited the “Prayer of Praise to the Virgin Mary.”
Many also participated in the tradition of tying written wishes on napkins and pieces of paper to the designated prayer wall.
The ceremony concluded with the sharing of grapes and bread, symbolizing unity and fellowship among the faithful.
The House of the Virgin Mary continues to be a significant destination for religious tourism, drawing thousands of visitors annually, particularly on this important day.
