EXCLUSIVE BY KEVSER ERBAY — The wonderful taste of Turkish coffee has been bringing people together for centuries.

But it’s more than just a cup of coffee. It represents tradition, social interaction and hospitality in the Turkish culture.

The celebration of Turkish coffee culture is celebrated on Dec.5  as it was put on UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2013.

The U.S. capital declared Dec. 5 as World Turkish Coffee Culture Day following an initiative by a Turkish cultural group.

In an age where coffee has evolved into an emblem of bustling mornings and fast-paced lifestyles, Turkish coffee stands as a testament to tradition, community and the art of slowing down.

Beyond its rich aroma and bold flavor, Turkish coffee represents a cultural tapestry woven with history, social connection and warm hospitality.

The roots of Turkish coffee trace back through centuries, entwined with the annals of history and tradition.

Originating in the Ottoman Empire during the 15th century, coffee found its way into the hearts and homes of people, transforming into a revered aspect of Turkish customs.

It was more than just a beverage. It was a social catalyst that brought friends, family and communities together.

UNESCO recognized the profound cultural importance of Turkish coffee in 2013, acknowledging its place as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

This recognition catapulted Turkish coffee into a global spotlight, honoring its role in fostering dialogue, strengthening bonds and preserving a heritage passed down through generations.

But what makes Turkish coffee distinct goes beyond its preparation method and its delicious strong flavor.

The rituals associated with it, the etiquette of serving and the meaningful conversations shared over a cup are all of immense importance.

The process of preparing and enjoying Turkish coffee embodies patience, respect and appreciation to devour the final moment when we take the first sip of coffee.

Whether enjoyed in a bustling cafe, a serene home or amid a gathering of friends, Turkish coffee continues to foster connections and bridge cultures across the globe.
