Annie Lennox pays tribute to Sinead O’Connor, demands cease-fire in Gaza
Annie Lennox honors the late Sinead O’Connor and calls for a cease-fire in Gaza at the Grammy Awards
Even though Annie Lennox has climbed the ladder of fame through her career with Eurythmics, the musician has also built a reputation as an activist. At the 2024 Grammy Awards, Lennox delivered a powerful message, further solidifying her impact beyond the realm of music.
During a tribute to the late Irish singer Sinead O’Connor, Lennox performed “Nothing Compares 2 U,” culminating in a fervent plea for peace. She proclaimed, “Artists for ceasefire. Peace in the world,” aligning with the Artists for Ceasefire movement that emerged against the backdrop of the Israel-Gaza conflict.
The movement, initiated in response to the conflict, has attracted high-profile supporters like Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez. Their collective call urges the U.S. government to enforce an immediate cease-fire and prioritize humanitarian aid.
Lennox’s career has been intertwined with social advocacy. Her tribute to O’Connor, an artist and activist who died last July at 56, served as both a commemoration of her life and a platform for advocating global peace. The Grammy event also saw other artists like Boygenius express solidarity by donning Artists For Ceasefire pins.
