Ancient sarcophagus discovered during infrastructure works in Türkiye’s Denizli

A significant archaeological discovery has been made in Türkiye’s Denizli province, where an ancient sarcophagus was unearthed during ongoing infrastructure works in the Kale district.
Authorities have since designated the area as a protected archaeological site to preserve its historical significance.

Experts confirm archaeological importance
The Aydin Regional Board for the Protection of Cultural Heritage conducted a thorough examination of the sarcophagus and surrounding artifacts discovered in Cevherpasa Neighbourhood.
Their assessment confirmed the site’s potential as an archaeological zone, leading to its official registration as a second and third-degree archaeological site.
Legal protection for historical preservation
Following expert analysis and institutional evaluations, authorities determined that the plots numbered 327/7 and 329/2 in Cevherpasa Neighbourhood fall under the scope of Türkiye’s Law No. 2863 on the Protection of Cultural and Natural Assets.
Consequently, the Aydin Regional Board officially recognized the area as the “Cevherpasa Neighbourhood 2nd and 3rd Degree Archaeological Site,” ensuring its protection against future development projects.

New regulations for conservation
In addition to designating the site as protected, the Aydin Regional Board established interim conservation principles and usage conditions. This decision marks a crucial step in safeguarding Denizli’s rich historical heritage. Archaeological excavations and research in the area will continue, potentially uncovering further remnants of the past.
The discovery underscores Türkiye’s commitment to preserving its cultural and historical treasures while shedding new light on the region’s ancient past.
