Greek police thwarts illegal sale of 283 ancient artifacts, arresting a local man also charged with drug possession
A Greek man was arrested for possession of ancient coins and artifacts, that he intended to sell later, in Kavala.
The arrest, which took place on Tuesday evening, was carried out by the Kavala Security Department officers, who seized 283 ancient items in his possession.
The confiscated items include 267 ancient coins and 16 other artifacts, notably a marble mortar, seven lead connectors, a ring, a lead pellet, two spherical weights, two ceramic fragments, an iron handle and an iron hook.
Additionally, two metal detectors were found, which the suspect allegedly used to locate these valuable finds.
The authorities reported the artifacts would be sent to the Kavala Antiquities Ephorate for evaluation and determination of their origins, as reported by the Athens News Agency.
The man has also been charged with violations of laws regarding the protection of antiquities and narcotics, as a small quantity of raw cannabis was also discovered in his possession.
The investigation of the matter is underway.
