Duru Bulam, a 16-year-old student from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University Istanbul State Conservatory, has achieved a remarkable victory in the Flutissimo 2025 Flute Competition in France—despite not being able to attend in person due to visa issues.

She secured first place in her category by submitting a video performance.

Flutissimo: Prestigious platform for flutists

Founded in 2002 by the A Traverse la Flute Association, the Flutissimo Flute Festival has been held annually in Nice since 2011. The festival brings together talented flutists from different age groups, offering them the opportunity to showcase their skills and receive masterclasses from world-renowned musicians.

The competition features six age categories, allowing participants between 6 and 32 years old to compete. Bulam triumphed in the 15-18 age category, solidifying her place among the rising stars of the flute world.

Overcoming obstacles with talent, determination

Two months before the competition, Duru attempted to secure a visa appointment for France but could not obtain one. Recognizing her exceptional talent, the competition committee allowed her to participate by submitting a video of her performance.

Competing against four French flutists in her category, she impressed the jury and was unanimously awarded first place.

Symbol of hope, expression

Speaking about her achievement, Bulam expressed her passion for music, stating, “Music symbolizes hope for me, and it is also a means of self-expression.”

Her victory highlighted both her artistic excellence and the barriers faced by young musicians navigating international competitions.
