1,000-year-old grave in Ukraine reveals skeletons with neck rings

More than 107 skeletons buried with neck rings and buckets were found in a 1,000-year-old tomb discovered near the Ukrainian capital Kyiv

Inside the graves near the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, more than 107 skeletons were discovered, accompanied by an assortment of items including bones, axes, swords, spears, jewelry, and chicken bones.

Some skeletons were also found with rings around their necks, while others had buckets on their feet. This site is believed to be a mass pagan grave.

In particular, the female skeletons were found with rings around their necks and wrists, which researchers say may have served as a means to distinguish gender.

More than 1,000 years ago, the people of Ukraine converted to Christianity and the researchers believe that it likely belonged to pagan groups.

Archaeologists revealed to the website Science Live that the excavation of the cemetery took place over a period spanning from 2017 to 2022. However, ongoing tensions and the occupation of Ukraine by Russia have disrupted numerous archaeological endeavors in the region, including the investigation of this particular site.
