Türkiye’s top billionaire lives surprisingly humble life despite raking in success
Murat Ulker, one of Turkiye’s wealthiest individuals and the head of Yildiz Holding, leads a remarkably modest life despite making waves in the business world.
His holding company’s building, with its preserved historic charm reminiscent of London’s grandiose old buildings, reflects his deep appreciation for art, showcased by the artwork and paintings adorning its walls.
Ulker lives by the philosophy of “make others happy, and you will be happy yourself,” a principle he applies both in his personal life and his business practices.
Known for his love of humor and wit, Ulker is also recognized for his intelligence and critical thinking.
Türkiye, only home
In an interview, Ulker revealed he does not own any property outside Turkiye, and prefers staying in hotels during his travels. “I travel the world, I have businesses everywhere, but I only have a home in Turkiye,” he said.
Addressing questions about capital movement, Ulker stated: “I did not move capital abroad; I carried my reputation. I expanded globally with the reputation I earned in my country.”
‘Innovative, not conservative’
Ulker does not consider himself “conservative,” but rather “innovative.” “I follow whatever is new in my life and work. Islam is also an innovative religion. I am not conservative, but I am a Muslim,” he explained.
He confirmed he does not hold any foreign citizenship and has no intention of obtaining one.
“I do not have any foreign passports, nor do I plan to,” Ulker maintained.
No private jet
Notably, Ulker is among the rare billionaires without a private jet. He sold his two jets 10-15 years ago, citing a need for investment and savings as the reason. “I didn’t sell the jets because they (private jets) would bankrupt me, but to demonstrate the necessity of saving and investing during that time,” he added.
When asked about his involvement in the media, Ulker laughed and said: “God forbid. I’m a biscuit and chocolate maker, not a media tycoon. I don’t think anyone makes money in the media.”
Love for Fenerbahce
On the topic of potentially becoming the president of Fenerbahce, a club he is passionate about, Ulker said, “It is not my job. Why would I enter an area I don’t understand and risk failure? Fenerbahce already has a president, and I have never considered or will consider becoming one.”
Ulker also criticized individuals who lose money through investments or gambling, suggesting that their assets should be seized and they should be placed under guardianship.
Additionally, he expressed concern about the impact of betting on violence in football.
Other feathers in the cap
A keen enthusiast of the sea, sailing, and diving, Ulker also has a passion for classic cars, particularly Mercedes models. He is a dedicated art collector and a certified sniper, a skill inherited from his late father, Sabri Ulker.
Ulker’s precision as a sniper, hitting targets at 1,000 yards, is a testament to his diverse interests and personal achievements.
