Türkiye’s Birgi embraces sustainability to become world-class destination

Located in Izmir’s Odemis district, the historic and culturally rich village of Birgi is making significant strides toward becoming a model for sustainable tourism.
Listed on UNESCO’s World Heritage Tentative List and recognized as one of the “Best Villages in the World” by United Nations World Tourism Organization in 2022, Birgi recently underwent a sustainability assessment by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC).
With a history that spans from the Phrygians and Lydians to the Ottoman Empire, Birgi’s preserved traditional architecture attracts thousands of visitors annually.
The latest evaluation aims to ensure the preservation and enhancement of this heritage within a sustainable tourism framework.
GSTC evaluation of sustainability
GSTC Director Mihee Kang and her team conducted an on-site assessment to evaluate Birgi’s compliance with sustainable tourism criteria.
The team engaged with local authorities, public institutions, tourism sector representatives, nongovernmental organizations and academics through meetings and field visits to determine Birgi’s potential as a sustainable tourism destination.
Dr. Kang highlighted Türkiye’s significant progress in sustainable tourism, stating, “Türkiye has made remarkable advancements in sustainable tourism. The certification process for hotels and adherence to global standards have drawn attention worldwide. In this regard, Turkey is leading globally in sustainable tourism.”
Recommendations for Birgi’s future
Kang praised Birgi’s preserved cultural assets and emphasized the importance of public and private sector collaboration for sustainability.
She noted, “Transforming Birgi into a sustainable tourism model requires the collaboration of various stakeholders. We hope to see continued efforts with the involvement of different ministries and partners.”
As Birgi progresses toward its sustainable tourism goals, it will contribute to the preservation of both its environmental and cultural values.
The report prepared by GSTC will outline necessary steps to achieve these objectives and develop management strategies aligned with sustainable tourism principles.
