Türkiye set to be self-sufficient in natural gas for households by 2028: Energy Minister
By 2028, Türkiye aims to supply natural gas to 20 million households with domestically produced gas, Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar announced at the “Natural Gas Supply Ceremony” in Turkish city of Sivas.
Bayraktar highlighted that production is increasing daily, with a current capacity to supply natural gas to 3 million households.
Energy independent Türkiye
“Our production is growing every day,” Bayraktar said. “By 2028, we will ensure every household in Türkiye is using domestically produced natural gas. Our goal is to make Türkiye energy independent under the leadership of President Erdogan in this century of Türkiye.”
He also emphasized efforts to reduce reliance on foreign energy and ensure energy remains affordable for citizens.
Türkiye produces 71,000 barrels of high-quality oil daily
Referring to the recent Sakarya gas field discovery, Bayraktar stated, “We found natural gas in the Sakarya field, and in a time when areas like Sirnak were once inaccessible, we now produce over 71,000 barrels of Türkiye’s highest quality oil daily in Gabar.“
Sirnak’s Gabar region, long associated with conflict and terrorism, has now become a cornerstone of Türkiye’s energy production. Once deemed too dangerous to access due to the PKK terror group’s presence, Gabar is now emblematic of Türkiye’s resilience, marking the nation’s shift toward greater energy independence and strategic self-sufficiency.
Meanwhile, as of November 2024, Türkiye produced 3.425 million barrels of crude oil, half of which originated from Gabar.
Bayraktar added that Türkiye’s energy strategy focuses on retaining foreign exchange within the country.
“We pay billions of dollars annually for energy imports. Our aim is to meet our energy needs with our own resources,” he said.
“We are working tirelessly to achieve this goal and provide energy to our citizens,” he added.
