In a significant energy milestone, Türkiye has nearly doubled its oil production in the Gabar region, marking a key achievement in the country’s push toward energy independence.

Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar recently highlighted that daily oil production in Gabar now exceeds 64,000 barrels, an increase from the 35,061 barrels recorded in early January 2024.

Why it matters

This achievement represents a major step for Türkiye in its pursuit of reducing dependence on foreign energy sources.

  • It strengthens the country’s energy security, providing a stable supply of domestic oil.
  • The Gabar region, once a hotspot for conflict and terrorism, has now become a critical energy production hub, signaling Türkiye’s resilience and determination.

Details of Gabar Oil Field

  • Bayraktar shared the latest update on social media, noting that Gabar now produces Türkiye’s highest-quality oil.
  • In November 2023, Türkiye set a new record by producing 3.425 million barrels of crude oil, with half of that coming from Gabar.
  • The minister expressed confidence that Türkiye will continue to break new records, stating that the country will maintain its momentum in energy production throughout 2024.

January update

In January 2024, Türkiye reached another significant milestone, with the Turkish Petroleum Corporation announcing that daily oil production in Gabar had surpassed 35,061 barrels—a new high for the region at that time.

  • Turkish Petroleum Corporation celebrated the achievement on social media, stating, “We broke the first record of the year in Gabar. Daily production has reached 35,061 barrels of oil.”

Zoom in

  • Once considered an area too dangerous to access due to the PKK’s presence, Gabar has now become a symbol of Türkiye’s growing energy independence and resilience.
  • This transformation is part of Türkiye’s broader strategy to reduce its reliance on external energy and strengthen its economic position.

Zoom out

  • The success in Gabar is not only about increasing production; it is a key part of Türkiye’s long-term strategy to secure energy independence and ensure a stable, sustainable energy future.
  • As production continues to rise, Gabar will play an increasingly vital role in Türkiye’s energy security, positioning the country as a major regional energy player.
