Türkiye has initiated preparations for a new domestically produced satellite to replace Turksat 3A, which has reached the end of its theoretical lifespan, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloglu announced.

Turksat 3A nears retirement

Uraloglu stated that Turksat 3A, currently among Türkiye’s active satellites in space, is nearing the completion of its operational lifecycle but may remain functional for a few more years.

“We have started preparations for the satellite that will replace Turksat 3A. Our goal is for this new satellite to be domestically developed, with more advanced capabilities,” Uraloglu said.

Türkiye’s expanding satellite fleet

Turksat currently operates six communications satellites: Turksat 3A, 4A, 4B, 5A, 5B, and 6A. The locally produced Gokturk surveillance satellite also plays a crucial role in Türkiye’s space presence.

Uraloglu emphasized the importance of Turksat 6A, Türkiye’s first fully domestically designed and produced communications satellite. “This satellite is particularly significant as it was entirely developed by Turkish engineers and manufactured by Turkish firms. We are now in the final phase of testing, and Turksat 6A will soon be operational,” he said.

With Turksat 6A’s entry into service, Turksat will be managing six satellites simultaneously, including four positioned within the same orbital slot, a first for the company.

The expanded fleet will significantly enhance Türkiye’s global satellite communications offerings.

Strengthening Türkiye’s space capabilities

Türkiye has launched three communications satellites since 2021, joining a small group of nations capable of deploying multiple satellites within a short timeframe.

Uraloglu highlighted that investments in space technology are critical to shaping Türkiye’s future position in the sector.

“Our investments in space technologies are strategic steps that will determine our future standing. The advancements made in satellite technology over the past 30 to 40 years, especially in the last two decades, have been substantial,” he noted.

Growing interest in the space industry

The minister also pointed to the increasing interest of the private sector in space-related initiatives. “Today, not only Turksat but many private companies are actively engaged in space projects.

Low Earth orbit satellites are being launched, and new projects are in development. Türkiye is on track to establish a stronger presence in space in the near future,” Uraloglu stated.
