In line with the EU’s Digital Markets Act, Türkiye is embarking on regulatory changes to ensure fair competition in digital markets. This initiative aims to prevent large enterprises from monopolizing market rules and protect businesses operating in these marketplaces.

New measures against unfair competition

The Ministry of Trade has started drafting a proposal to align with the EU’s Digital Markets Act, which was implemented across EU countries last year. This act seeks to mitigate unfair competition and address injustices faced by small businesses in e-commerce.

Draft proposal in progress

The Trade Ministry’s draft proposal focuses on addressing the concerns of small enterprises, which have been subjected to unfair practices in e-commerce marketplaces. During recent discussions in the Parliamentary Industry Commission, these issues were brought to light.

Key voices on the initiative

Commission Chairman Mustafa Varank highlighted the draft preparation, emphasizing that future regulations will target dominant market players, significantly enhancing competitive practices.

AK Party Deputy Chairman Omer Ileri also remarked on upcoming efforts to fortify the Competition Protection Law, particularly in ensuring fair competition within digital platforms. This proposal is expected to be presented to the Parliament in the coming months.

Protection against market dominance

The draft proposal by the Trade Ministry aims to introduce new rules to prevent a few large enterprises from dictating trade regulations in digital markets. The focus is on preventing the victimization of businesses selling in these marketplaces and ensuring fair competition. The initiative also aims to protect small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from being overshadowed by global e-commerce platforms with significant market power.
