Turkish ATMs no longer accessible without facial identification

Türkiye’s Ministry of Justice announced a new regulation regarding ATM security. Under this new measure, individuals whose faces are not identifiable by ATM cameras will not be able to make transactions.
The new rule requires that an individual’s face be clearly visible to the camera, but it does not involve face recognition technology like those used on mobile phones. Additionally, strict measures are being introduced to prevent fraudulent mobile subscriptions.
Unidentified individuals will not be able to use ATMs
According to an announcement on the Ministry of Justice’s official website, the 4th Judicial Reform Strategy Document was revealed, introducing stricter regulations in banking and mobile subscription services.
One of the key changes involves the implementation of facial recognition technology at ATMs. From now on, if an ATM camera cannot clearly capture a person’s face, they will not be able to carry out any transactions.
This means that individuals who wear masks or conceal their faces will not be able to withdraw money. Anyone with a visible face will be able to use the ATM without any issues.
Furthermore, the new regulations specify that the footage from ATM security cameras will be stored for a minimum of two years for security purposes.
Tightened rules for bank account opening
Previously, opening a bank account required only a photocopy of the individual’s identification card. However, the new regulation mandates that banks can no longer open accounts without verifying the national ID card with its digital chip.
