Social media disruptions in Türkiye continue after Mayor Imamoglu’s detention

Access to X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, and WhatsApp remains disrupted in Türkiye following the detention of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu.
While WhatsApp and YouTube have serious slowdowns, access to other platforms is completely cut off.
Large-scale operation continues
The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office has launched a large-scale operation against over 100 individuals, including Mayor Imamoglu.
Reports indicate that over 100 people are facing detention orders, with authorities conducting searches at Imamoglu’s residence as part of the ongoing investigation.
Social media platforms still affected nationwide
Users in Türkiye continue to report significant connectivity issues on multiple social media platforms. According to data from DownDetector, access to X, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, and WhatsApp remains heavily restricted.
Restrictions expected to last several more days
Turkish media sources suggest that the social media restrictions may continue for at least another couple of days.
Users attempting to access these platforms have experienced slow loading times, connection failures, and complete outages, raising concerns about internet freedom and digital access in the country.
The sudden disruptions have sparked debates over the possible imposition of internet restrictions in response to political developments.
While no official statement has been made regarding the outages, digital rights organizations and media watchdogs are closely monitoring the situation.
