Samsung launches the Galaxy S24 Ultra, a premium smartphone with new artificial intelligence features to regain its position as the world’s top phone seller

On Wednesday, Samsung launched its latest flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S24 Ultra, featuring cutting-edge artificial intelligence capabilities in a bid to regain its position as the world’s leading phone seller, surpassing Apple.

The highlight of the premium S24 Ultra is its ability to translate foreign language phone calls and texts simultaneously, a feature available in 13 languages. This on-device function is powered by Samsung’s proprietary AI technology, showcasing the company’s commitment to innovation.

In collaboration with Google, the maker of the Android operating system for the smartphone, the S24 introduces a groundbreaking search function. Utilizing AI, users can simply circle a phrase or image they want to search, eliminating the need to navigate between apps for cumbersome cut-and-paste operations.

The phone’s camera capabilities are also enhanced through AI, with generative AI assisting in background filling or removal. These AI features, whether powered from the cloud or the phone itself, leverage Google’s Gemini foundational model, which is also integral to the search engine giant’s Bard chatbot.

Rumors abound that similar AI features will be incorporated into the upcoming iPhone 16, expected to be released later this year, as both tech giants vie for supremacy in the competitive smartphone market.

Building on the durability trend set by Apple’s iPhone 15, Samsung’s S24 boasts a titanium frame, enhancing robustness and longevity.

The Galaxy S24 series is slated to start shipping on January 31, with the top-of-the-line Ultra model available at a starting price of $1,299. The release comes shortly after industry data revealed that, for the first time, Apple’s iPhone overtook Samsung as the world’s best-selling smartphone in 2023. The International Data Corporation reported iPhone sales of 234.6 million units, surpassing Samsung’s 226.6 million units, ending the South Korean firm’s 12-year reign at the top.
