Food inflation in September 2024 increased by 0.48%, according to data released by the Economic Policy Research Foundation of Türkiye (TEPAV).

The monthly inflation rise was driven by significant price hikes in pepper varieties, while fresh herbs such as dill, arugula and mint saw notable price declines.

The annual food inflation for the same period was recorded at 49.13% marking the lowest level of food inflation over the past year.

In the fresh fruit and vegetable category, while peppers (including charleston, green, and bell peppers) experienced sharp price increases, other items like dill, arugula and mint witnessed price drops.

Outside of this category, hazelnuts, eggs, and sunflower oil also saw significant price hikes. On the other hand, sugar paper, fish and jam prices decreased.

According to the TEPAV Food Price Index (TEGE) for the period from Sept. 1 to Sept. 30, the monthly food inflation rate is calculated at 0.48%.

The Turkish Confederation of Trade Unions (Turk-Is) reported a food inflation rate of 2.90%, while the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce (ITO) Cost of Living Index (UGE) recorded a rate of 2.63% for the same period.

Data from TurkStat, CEFIS and ENAG have yet to be released, according to the statement issued by TEPAV.

For the full year ending in September 2024, TEGE recorded an annual food inflation rate of 49.13%, while Turk-Is reported 48.72% and ITO-UGE noted 56.23%.

The year-to-date cumulative food inflation is calculated at 29.47%, according to TEGE, compared to 36.23% by ITO-UGE and 37.41% by Turk-Is.
