List of Türkiye’s tax debtors to be announced
The Turkish government has announced a new measure aimed at addressing tax evasion. Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Simsek has stated that the names of taxpayers with outstanding tax debts or fines exceeding ₺5 million ($147,250.25) will be made public.
These individuals, labeled “tax delinquents” by the minister, will have their names listed at tax offices across the country and on the Revenue Administration’s official website.
New regulation published in Official Gazette
The Ministry of Treasury and Finance has announced that it will be disclosing the names of taxpayers with debts of ₺5 million or more to tax offices. The disclosure will include taxpayers who have not paid their taxes by Sept. 30, 2024, as well as those whose tax assessments were finalized between June 1, 2023, and May 31, 2024, based on tax inspections or tax board decisions.
The ministry has the authority to disclose the names of taxpayers with debts of ₺5 million or more, regardless of their debt status. The disclosure will be published in the Official Gazette and will enter into force immediately.
Publication dates of list
Taxpayer lists will be posted at all tax offices across Turkiye from Oct. 15 to 31 and on the Revenue Administration’s website from Nov. 1 to 15.
The excluded taxpayers include:
- Those whose offset and swap applications are accepted under the Municipal Law.
- Municipal entities or companies with more than 50% of their capital owned by metropolitan municipalities whose debts date back to Dec. 31, 2004, or earlier.
- Those whose restructuring of receivables continues.
- Taxpayers in certain provinces affected by the Feb. 6 earthquakes will also be excluded.
The ministry’s decision to reveal the names of tax defaulters has been criticized by some as a violation of personal data privacy.
