Istanbul’s preschool and caregiver costs surge by 150%
In Istanbul, the rising costs of preschools and caregivers are creating financial strain for working parents, according to a report in Turkish news outlet Cumhuriyet daily.
Haci Murat Kus, head of the Private Preschools Association, reported a 150% increase in fees over the past year, with preschool costs now ranging from ₺17,000 ($504) to ₺35,000 and caregiver fees around ₺45,000.
The substantial price hikes are compelling some families to seek assistance from grandparents, though many still opt for preschools or caregivers due to the essential social and educational benefits provided.
Kus noted that the high costs have led to significant concerns among parents about where to place their children.
He emphasized the importance of preschools for peer interaction and developmental benefits, contrasting this with the limitations and potential risks associated with relying on grandparents or caregivers.
He also urged parents to be diligent in verifying the credentials and quality of educational institutions to ensure their children receive proper care and education.
